Workshop – Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools in Research and Teaching

On January 14, Ilia State University hosted a workshop titled “Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools in Research and Teaching,” which focused on two key topics: Ethical Challenges Related to Generative AI in Research and Accountable Learning in the Age of AI: Designing Assessments for Human Responsibility.

The workshop was led by professors visiting Ilia State University: Tomáš Foltýnek, President of the European Network for Academic Integrity; Irene Glendinning (Coventry University, United Kingdom); Shiva Subramaniam (University of Roehampton, United Kingdom); and Roman Gabrhelík (Charles University, Czech Republic). The speakers addressed ethical issues related to the use of AI tools in research and teaching, and discussed the need to transform assessment systems in academic courses, highlighting successful practices.

At the end of 2025, Ilia State University established the Center for the Development of Distance Learning and Academic Integrity, which will be responsible for developing university-level policies in these areas.

On the same day, the international guests met with the Chancellor of Ilia State University and the ETHICS project working group, where they discussed opportunities to expand existing cooperation.

The workshop was held within the framework of the European Commission–funded project “Responsible Conduct of Research – Research Integrity and Ethics in Georgian Universities (ETHICS).” The main objective of the project is to improve mechanisms, procedures, and services related to research ethics and integrity in universities.
